The girls varsity basketball team worked hard this season but fell short of making the playoffs for the second straight year. The girls ended up with a record of 9-17 after defeating Paradise Valley in an overtime win on senior night.
When asked about what she believes the team needs to improve upon for next season, sophomore guard Maggie Clements said “that the team should get better at working together because sometimes we rush into things and don’t fully carry out in plays” and that the team needs to improve on “getting more intense as the season goes on.”
Junior guard Shannon Nagel had a similar thought and said, “I would like the team to get better at shooting and working together as a team when we have the ball.”
Both players had a similar response when asked what they will miss the most from this season. Clements said, “I will remember and miss the people and all the fun times I had with them because they are all so amazing and I love spending time with them.”
Nagel said, “One thing I will always remember is the many memories and laughs the team had, throughout the season, we have all grown closer together and become great friends.”
The team had one senior for the 2019-2020 season, guard Julia Marr. When asked how she wants to be remembered, Marr said that she loved to play the game and that she was a hard competitor. Marr said that she will miss the weird and amazing memories she has made with her teammates the most. She said, “My teammates truly made basketball worth everything, even in the toughest days.”
Marr also said, “One memory that stood out to be the most memorable that I will never forget was my sophomore year when the bus broke down going to Flagstaff to play Coconino and we had to walk a mile to the game.” Marr was a big part of this year’s team and the program overall during her four years, and they will miss her next year.
This team will be one to watch for in the 2020-2021 season. They have young players who love to work hard and their chemistry is only going to get better. If this team continues to grow together and improve their game, they will have playoff potential next year.
